The company
Since 1947, FILMDIENST has been providing reviews on behalf of the Catholic Church, a leading film portal with reviews of all German cinema releases. Since 1998, trinidat has been supporting FILMDIENST in the digitization of its diverse offerings for film fans. FILMDIENST not only contains reviews of cinema films, it also deals with other media. Thus, the editors comment on noteworthy films that appear on television or online. A highly qualified editorial staff and a large body of freelance film critics write reviews, news, portraits, report on film festivals or commemorate film classics and milestones in film history. The topics require a high degree of topicality. In order to meet the demand for quality at the same time, online editions should be able to be planned in advance in an individual editorial system.
The task
As one of the first projects in its company history, trinidat has developed a film database. In it, FILMDIENST manages over 95,000 film reviews. At the beginning of 2018, the FILMDIENST print magazine was discontinued. Since then, FILMDIENST has existed exclusively as a digital publication. To this end, FILMDIENST commissioned trinidat to develop a sophisticated content management system in the form of a modern web application. Since filmdienst.de is available online around the clock and has several hundred thousand visits, the web application, which was developed using C# and .NET, had to be particularly stable.
The goals:
- User-friendly editorial system with planning function
- Stable and reliable web application
- Search engine optimized online service
The challenge
In order for the FILMDIENST portal editors to be able to quickly and reliably provide content for users, it was particularly important to develop a web application that was as easy to use as it was stable. In order to publish content that is both up-to-date and of high quality, a planning function was to be integrated that makes it possible to plan several online editions in advance and to check and evaluate them in a preview view. An editor function should include text formatting as well as an interface to other media, such as photos, graphics and, of course, movie trailers.
The solution
The trinidat team developed an individual content management system with ASP.NET in the programming language C#. This ensures high stability and reliability.
To enable the FILMDIENST editorial team to plan new content or publish it at short notice, trinidat programmed smart workflow functions. For example, if new articles are added to a slider, the older articles are automatically moved to the overview page of this section. In cooperation with dreipunktdrei mediengesellschaft mbH, which is also involved in the project, the web application is continuously optimized in terms of SEO. This concerns, for example, the formatting and wording of headlines, the formation of URLs, the possibility of entering description texts and much more.
Conclusion
Since the beginning of 2018, the digital version of FILMDIENST has been under continuous development. New user-friendly functions and technological improvements are constantly being added. trinidat continuously provides the required programming capacities. Thus, the portal will hopefully continue to provide valuable information for cineastes for decades to come.
