The initiative

Dogs are part of our lives: man’s best friend lives in one in five households. Dogs are not only pets, but are also valued by many people as hunting dogs.

The Jagdgebrauchshundverband e.V. (JGHV), as the umbrella organization for German hunting dog use, brings together clubs that contribute to the provision of useful hunting dogs through testing, breeding and training, and thus support ethical hunting. Since 1899, the tasks and objectives of the JGHV have included, among other things, setting common testing regulations, creating guidelines for training and appointing association judges, and cultivating the cultural aspects of hunting cynology, i.e. the scientific study of dogs. As of 2024, 342 clubs and associations belong to the JGHV, in which around 180,000 hunters who use hunting dogs are organized.

The order

The JGHV has been working as an umbrella organization for German hunting dog training for 125 years, with extensive data on hunting dogs and their pedigrees, common examination regulations and results, as well as guidelines for the appointment of association judges. Since the 1990s, the data, which has grown over many years, has been partially digitized. Digital data collection is of central importance to the JGHV. To this end, a software developer from the hunting industry created a database software that initially met the association’s requirements in terms of data collection and management.

Due to the increasing demands on the individual software and the limited availability and specialization of the previous programmer, the JGHV 2020 decided to commission trinidat to develop a custom-fit web application. As an experienced company in the field of customized software development, trinidat offered not only expertise but also, above all, continuity and reliability in the development process.

The objectives

With the replacement of the existing application and the new development of a web application, the JGHV first wanted to be sure that the large and growing amounts of JGHV data and their complex administration would be stored securely and sustainably. The highest data security and simplified processing of guidelines and test results by the association’s employees were specific requirements for the new application to be developed. Since the JGHV requires very specific functions, such as customized plausibility queries and complex calculation formulas, customized software was the only possible option. Standard software is generally not a solution for such customer-specific requirement profiles.

The challenge

The challenge

A major challenge for the development of the new database software was the large and complex amount of data managed by the JGHV. A number of different types of tests with many different test criteria had to be combined in one application. At the same time, the software had to ensure efficient and, above all, error-free management of data on the organizing clubs, judges and dogs, including their breeders. For the data migration, which was to be carried out “gently”, i.e. in stages, data from the past 30 years had to be transferred. The migration of the test data was particularly tricky, as some of it was based on different test criteria than the current tests.

The solution

On the basis of the existing range of functions of the previous application, trinidat developed a modern and powerful web application with a team of three experienced software developers. Various technologies were used to redevelop the existing judge management, association management and registry office. The web application was programmed in the C# programming language in the Microsoft.Net 6.0 framework. trinidat also used the JavaScript programming language, the Blazor web framework and the Microsoft SQL server as the database system for the software development.

Results

With the web application developed by trinidat, the JGHV has a secure, powerful and future-proof software for managing the diverse data of the umbrella organization and its member clubs and associations. Above all, the possible functional expansion of the application is valuable for the JGHV. In the future, even more workflows are to be combined via interfaces. For example, breeders’ associations are to be given the opportunity to record and enter test results via API. In order to further reduce the workload of JGHV employees in data management, decentralized data maintenance is to be further expanded so that in the future the affiliated clubs and associations will have direct access to the application, regulated by specified user rights.
